Parents often ask me how they can assist their children to develop into well-balanced persons. With all the technology that is available nowadays, with all the hypes and busts, it is hard to choose what is right for your child. What software to choose, what video programs to show, what early development class to sign-up for. My answer: None.

Between the age of 0 and 7 children should be left alone. But before any of you stress out and develop inferiority complex, while your neighbor’s child shows her superior abilities to count to 100 by the age of 3, let’s look at the child’s spiritual and mental development through the eyes of the Chakra System.

The time from birth to the age of 1 is governed by the Base chakra (trust, structure, security and connection to the family and community). Holding your child, singing lullabies, talking to your child, telling bedtime stories, making your child safe and snug is the most important job you can do. It is tiring. But if you want to be friends by the time they hit puberty, you have to start now. And before you ask: don’t use TV as a babysitter. Structured, well planned day is essential. No loud noises or crowds. In short: “No surprises”. Food, sleep and play must be always at the same time.

The age between 1 and 2 is ruled by the Second chakra. Creativity is the most important quality your child develops during this time. And again before you ask: no this is not the time to introduce them to TV, computer and your smart device. They have to discover, make mistakes, learn and find the proper way on their own, and by observing you. Play, be goofy, and laugh together.

The age between 2 and 3 is the age of the Power chakra, the age of the will and ambitions (talking about terrible twos). This is the best time to start letting your child to help with the house chores. Make it fun to participate in preparation of the family dinner or sweeping the floor and putting all the toys away.

The time between 3 and 4 is the time ruled by the Heart chakra, the chakra of unconditional love. The time when your child discovers that their actions affect people and can make them laugh or cry. This is the time when they attentively listen to your opinion: Is it good, is it bad? Take them to the short performances or show them short cartoons (10 – 15 minutes), always watch with them, express your opinion, explain why it is right or wrong.

The age between 4 and 5 is governed by the Throat Chakra. And it is all about self-expression. It shapes on a solid foundation build during earlier years: Trust, Creativity, Will and Consideration. Without the Trust (Base Chakra Stage) there is no openness. Without the Creativity (Second Chakra Stage) there is no ingenuity. Without the Will (Power Chakra Stage) there is no execution plan. Without the Consideration (Heart Chakra Stage) there is no peace. Listen and be amused by their stories, sign them up for the art class, let them pick their own outfit or decorate their bedroom. Let them have fun, don’t push.

The age between 5 and 7 is the age of the Third Eye chakra, the chakra of intuition and logic. The age when we are ready to ask difficult questions and listen to difficult answers. What is death? Am I going to die? What about my parents? The age when the childhood is almost over. The age when the child starts to understand the cause and effect of events and actions. The worst answer you can give to their “Why?” is “Because I said so”. Explain yourself, explain your decisions. It does not matter how many times you repeat the same answer. What matters is that there is a logic and rules (always the same rules) behind your decisions.

Approximately at the age of 7 your child enters the Crown Chakra development stage. The development of spirituality and the gathering of knowledge. The endless play days are over. They are ready to go to school and learn. The scary part? Your job is done. They are a little people now. This is the time for them to find their own ways. The best part? The first part of the journey is over, from here you walk together as friends for life. Enjoy.
